Description
Caffeine is one of the most widely used psychoactive substances worldwide with a significant impact on an individual, social, and economic level. Also, there is ample evidence in the literature on the physiological, cognitive, and emotional effects after consumption. Given its relevance, the objective of this study is to characterize the consumption of caffeine in a sample of the Portuguese population (with special emphasis on the quantities consumed, the forms, and the main reasons that lead to the consumption of this substance), and to understand its association with psychological well-being. The results point to higher consumption in males (when compared to females) and in the group of subjects aged between 31 to 35 years, which represents results similar to another study conducted with the Portuguese population. This study also made it possible to identify 50ml coffee (also known as “espresso”) as the most consumed source of caffeine in the Portuguese population. Finally, this study proved that among the reasons given by individuals for consuming caffeinated products are the improvement of alertness and the taste of products with caffeine.Period | 27 Oct 2020 |
