Climate change, urban planning and environmental migrants

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

Climate change is now one of the factors driving migratory movements. The arrival of urban centres increases demographic pressure in areas that are already under too much strain and which also contribute to climate change. Cities that are often also struggling to reduce and mitigate the most common effects of extreme weather events, such as the heat island effect, soil sealing and loss of biodiversity. As well as the subsequent health issues, economic and social stress. As a result, many cities that have not yet even managed to solve pre-existing problems. The arrival of environmental migrants means an overload of health, food, housing, and waste treatment facilities. These challenges added to the pre-existing ones demand more, better and faster measures to make the city even more resilient (11 SDGs) with a solidarity-based approach.
