Description
In crisis panoramas emerge others with latent creativity, products of the first ones and manifestations of willingness to change. Throughout the last century, in the Portuguese territory, we witnessed the loss and restoration of democracy and the gradual rebuilding of Portugal, increasingly approximated to a Europe at that time also in recovery. This situation, among other things, served as a trigger for the promotion of many artistic productions. This applies to the protest music, particularly that one within the Portuguese cultural scene since the end of the Estado Novo and its consequent revolution in 1974, up to today, moment marked by several crises, especially in financial terms. From José Afonso, José Mário Branco and Paulo de Carvalho, to current bands such as “Xutos&Pontapés” or “Deolinda”, the Portuguese protest music manifests itself diachronically but discontinuously, without leaving, however, the same level of latent issatisfaction about the current national situation. This discontent is demonstrated through processes of disguise and subliminal messages, product of creativity of each musician and affectively accepted or not by the general public which, decoding the intrinsic ideals, recognizes its dual democratic and artistic significance.
