Abstract:
This presentation, within the Internal Research Seminar involving clinicians and researchers from the Institute for General Medicine and Palliative Medicine at the Hannover Medical School (Versorgungsforschung, Schwerpunkt Allgemeinmedizin und Palliativmedizin, Institut für Allgemeinmedizin und Palliativmedizin, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Germany), focused on the core topics: (1) Research ethics and (2) Research integrity in Science when conducting palliative and end-of-life care research. In the first part of the session, the concept and relevance of research ethics were explored in light of core ethical principles, such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, vulnerability and responsibility. Some ethical challenges in palliative care research were presented and the main ethical implications and relevance of involving palliative care patients, their relatives and carers were discussed. In the second part, the grounding principles of research integrity were discussed together with their importance for societal trust in science. Exercises from both the EU-funded project VIRT2UE and the Embassy of Science were introduced.
