Summary: Gingivitis is a reversible inflammatory condition of the periodontium caused by a dysbiosis in bacterial biofilms, which stimulates the host immune mechanisms. The inflammatory condition is physiological in the initial and premature states, but the interaction between bacterial virulence factors and immune cells convert it in an irreversible pathological condition, Periodontitis. The quantification of salivary biofluid markers of patients with Gingivitis can elucidate the mechanisms that lead to this change. The chemokine CCL3 and CCL13 are mediator molecules of the immune response, as they recruit the periodontium defense cells, and are proposed as biomarkers of predictive risk for Periodontal Disease. Objective: Quantifying CCL3 and CCL13 in vivo in patients with Gingivitis and in healthy patients. Evaluate if those biomarkers identify the presence of periodontal inflammation, its extension, the potential of disease progression and also if they allow salivary differential diagnosis of Periodontal Disease in patients with Gingivitis. Material and Methods: 48 individuals were subjected to an intra-oral clinical exam, and according with periodontal clinical parameters, were grouped in two groups (S and G). They were subjected to a questionnaire about their medical history, eating habits and life quality, to achieve a better characterization of the study groups. They were subsequently submitted to collection of saliva samples for quantification of CCL3 and CCL 13,using Multiplex technology. Results: CCL3 and CCL13 were detected in low concentrations on saliva, and the values registered in the G group were higher than the values registered in the S group, without statistically significant difference (p>0,05). By correlating the values of BOP and PI of the S and G groups, with the CCL concentration, the values identified were not statistically different (p>0,05). Conclusions: The results do not allow the suggestion of CCL3 and CCL13 as biomarkers to evaluate the progression potential of Periodontal Disease in patients with Gingivitis.Period | 29 Jul 2015 |
