Description

The European University Association (EUA) will organise an online focus group on 13 November, to gather feedback from university actors on how to address ethical challenges in new technologies, in terms of training needs for research ethics committees. The event is part of the “Improving Research Ethics Expertise and Competencies to Ensure Reliability and Trust in Science” (iRECS) project.
Ethics in research constitutes a fundamental pillar for good science and it is an important element ensuring that the pursuit of knowledge and innovation is conducted responsibly inside universities. The way research and innovation are conducted is constantly evolving due to new emerging technologies, impacting the landscape of research ethics. This includes artificial intelligence (AI), extended reality, genome editing, and biobanking.

During this event, participants will receive a comprehensive briefing on the iRECS project and its recent developments, as well as an extensive overview of the draft recommendations on the training needs for research ethics committees in addressing those four technologies. This first part will be followed by a more interactive feedback-gathering session, during which participants will be asked to share their comments and engage in discussions regarding the proposed set of recommendations.
This event is open to university leaders, directors of research and innovation offices, members and chairs of research ethics committees, directors of doctoral schools, research ethics and integrity officers, research managers, open science delegates and researchers who are willing to actively contribute to this exchange and attend the entire focus group. To enable active participation, the number of available places is limited, and participants will be selected to ensure diversity in terms of geography, institutional profile, and professional background.
