Description
In Portugal, professional social work was preconised long before its birth in 1935. Faced with the serious problems that had been plaguing Portuguese society since the end of the monarchy - particularly indigence, low family budgets, precarious and unhealthy housing, lack of hygiene conditions and habits, and infant mortality - several proposals for social intervention were forged during the First Republic, with the aim of promoting "helping others" in a more organised, technical, scientific and rational way. However, it was necessary to wait until the establishment of the Estado Novo before a new national scenario concerning relations between Church, State and intellectual movements proved opportune for Social Work to be institutionalised in Portugal. This presentation focuses on the complex path that led to the opening of the first professional training school for Portuguese social workers (1935), emphasising the role of the hygienist current and the Catholic social movement, due to their particular significance during this process.
