Pen or Sword? Journalist meets Translator in the ESP/Translation Classroom

Although the role of translation in news writing can be traced back to the origins of journalism (Valdeón, 2018), journalistic routines and translation are usually treated as separate fields of intervention when, in practice, both grapple with the fast-paced production of information that is disseminated on a global scale (Bielsa and Bassnett, 2009). We believe that by means of a critical analysis of news texts and translation, students from these two academic backgrounds can develop a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between language and representation in the news.
This study is an explanatory account of a pilot pedagogical model applied to first year university students enrolled in two undergraduate degree subjects pertaining to different programs: English Language IV (Social and Cultural Communication Studies) and Translation of General English Texts (Applied Foreign Languages).Both groups were asked to discuss translation processes and techniques commonly used by journalists and translators, namely ‘transediting’ (Stetting,1989; Gambier,2009; Guerrero,2011) ‘domestication’ (Bielsa and Bassnett (2009), ‘localization’ (Pym, 2004; Orengo, 2005; Guerrero, 2009).
This study contributed to fostering students’ awareness towards broader topics, including the translators and/or journalists’ roles as gatekeepers (Shoemaker and Riccio,2015) and the (in)visibility of the translator in news translation (Valdeón, 2012). We also believe that by exploring these topics in the classroom, students gained insights into the roles of news producers, translators, and especially as agents in shaping public discourse and perceptions.
