Description

This study aims to define and analyze the specificities of documentary film festival curatorial practices. In this sense, it proposes to examine the role these practices play in worldmaking, through the valuation, cultural legitimation, and prioritization of aesthetic and political meanings. In addition, it intends to determine their role in cultivating alternative discourses by organizing collective public experiences through and around documentary film, while fostering innovative contemporary documentary filmmakers and approaches, with an intention of transforming the realm of nonfiction film. This will be executed through a longitudinal study of the curatorial strategies of the Doclisboa International Film Festival. The study aims to contribute to the fields of film curation and film festival research, while relating to broader questions on the importance of mediation in the current film and media culture and the role of mediation in creating commonality and collective identification.
