Protestantism in Portugal between the 19th and the 20th centuries. A moment of impulse for social and religious change.

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

We start from a basic problem: the contradiction between the fact that Protestant Christianity was, throughout the 19th century, simultaneously: able to structure itself in the Portuguese society through various projects and personalities with real impact, denounced as “dangerous” by 19th century Catholic documentation – while it was also defined, and consequently, sidelined as an ultra-minority group of weak significance. The period between 1852 (the first Portuguese Penal Code) and 1911 (the Law of Separation between Church and State) corresponded to an important conjuncture, beginning with the legislative exclusion of non-Catholic communities from the national identity, and ending with the definition of religious freedom in Portugal. We propose to identify the elements which allowed protestant communities to stop being perceived as a factor of disintegration in a society of citizenship and to start playing an active role in it.
