Description
The dissertation presented was in the scope of the Master in Psychology of Justice and Deviant Behavior, at the Catholic University of Porto, framed in the research project "Gender, Identity and Migrations" (Matos, 2016). Prioritizing the themes inherent to the project, the focus of this study is the interpersonal relations established by women of foreign nationality, in a Portuguese prison context. It is understood the assumption of relations in the context, such as those established inside the prison, as well as those that are maintained or dissipated on the outside. It is important to highlight the observation of the mutual connection that can occur in these two major categories. The study starts from a brief characterisation of 23 inmates of foreign nationality serving a sentence in the north of Portugal and is based on the perspectives of two inmates representing the main nationality - Brazilian - and type of crime - drug trafficking - found in that group. The main results show several constraints, such as geographical and financial, for family relations to constitute a relevant dimension of support during imprisonment. In the way they view relations with other inmates, some ambivalences are evident. Finally, they experience the presence of stereotypes and prejudices since they are foreign women by different entities and institutions.Period | 14 Jul 2020 |
