Acanthamoeba infections pose a growing global threat, therefore, it is essential to understand its epidemiology and to develop innovative therapies against it, which relies on the expertise of international and transdisciplinary experts. This discussion aims to explore trends in the parasite’s dissemination and its mechanisms of infection, while exploring clinical cases and how to correctly diagnose them. Innovative therapeutic approaches will be discussed with a focus on the potential of natural products and how to harness them for more sustainable treatment options. Measures to prevent and control Acanthamoeba infections will be debated while emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about their global impact. Lastly, the speakers will discuss the future of research on Acanthamoeba and show how collaborations between different areas of expertise are essential to fill in the research gaps. This panel aims to contribute to the establishment of new collaborations between experts from different fields, to develop novel therapies to tackle this public health concern, aligning with both Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 3 and 17, that are set to achieve good health and well-being and partnerships for the goals, respectively. Furthermore, with the objective of eliminating the contamination of water sources with Acanthamoeba parasites, this discussion also meets SDG 6 for clean water and sanitation.
