Biography

Amaro Carvalho da Silva got his PhD in History and Culture of Religions by Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon (2022) with a thesis on the political catholicism in Portugal, entitled Os trabalhos de Sísifo para a organização de um partido católico em Portugal: do Ultimato à República (1890-1913). He has a degree in Philosophy from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto (1978).

Collaborating researcher at the Centre of Religious History Studies (Centro de Estudos de História Religiosa) - Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP-CEHR), he coordinates the critical edition of the Diary (1891-1920) of Father Manuel José Martins Capela (1842-1925), under the ongoing project “The secular clergy: socio-religious elite and ecclesiastical leadership (19th and 20th centuries)”.

Author of various publications: O Partido Nacionalista no contexto do Nacionalismo Católico (1901-1910), Lisbon: Colibri, 1996; Esboço da Vida e Obra de Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho, Lisbon 1997, and several collaborations in collective works and in scientific journals.

Main areas of interest: Contemporary History; Political Catholicism; Neo-Thomism; Eclesiastical elites; Territorial development.
