Biography

Ana Beatriz V. Pereira is a BSc (2019-2022) and an MSc in Bioengineering (2022-2024) by the University of Porto. Currently, she is working at the Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina (CBQF) under a Research Fellowship.Throughout her academic journey, she obtained scientific knowledge from the most diverse areas of bioengineering, having deepened her laboratory and technical skills through the completion of several internships in the biomaterials and tissue regeneration areas (e.g. scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic/electrophoretic light scattering, attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, mechanical testing), in-vitro release techniques, cell culture techniques, biological characterisation (e.g. immunostaining, fluorescence microscopy, image analysis), mechanical stimulation, microbiology techniques, and computer modelling. In the framework of the Erasmus+ Program, she interned at the Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine (MERLN; Maastricht, The Netherlands), where she developed a microenvironment with topographical cues and mechanical stimulation for tendon regeneration and maturation. Her MSc thesis, entitled “Flavonoids and omega-3 fatty acids-loaded lipid nanocarriers enriched hydrogels as promising antimicrobial biofilm strategies”, was carried out at the University of Porto, University of Fernando Pessoa and University of Minho, obtaining a classification of 19 out of 20. As a result, she published 2 first-author scientific articles. The work she carried out during her ERASMUS’ internship led to a poster presentation in the “Annual International (bio) Medical Students Meeting” (2024, Lisbon, Portugal). Her MSc thesis work was also presented as a poster in the “4th Meeting of Young Biophysics - Biophysics Festival” (2024, Covilhã, Portugal), which was awarded with the “IUPAB Poster Prize” and “Best Poster Communication Prize”, and was selected for oral communication in the “10th Iberian Meeting on Colloids and Interfaces” (2024, Coimbra, Portugal). She also engaged in volunteering activities. During her MSc, she was a member of the “IEEE University of Porto Student Branch”, having organized and participated in several events. She also volunteered in the “Noite Europeia dos Investigadores” (2025) and she is also part of the organisation of the 2026 “Pint of Science” festival. These activities enhanced her communication and problem-solving skills.
