    Biography

    Ana Gomes completed her PhD in Chemistry (Medicinal Chemistry) in 2011 at the University of Aveiro, in collaboration with the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, focusing on novel pharmacological entities for Photodynamic Therapy of tumours. She then pursued postdoctoral research on photoinactivation of tumours and antimicrobial strategies at institutions such as FIOCRUZ and the University of Coimbra. In 2018, she secured her first research contract at UA, leading interdisciplinary projects on alternative therapies to antibiotics and the health benefits of new pharmacological entities.

     Ana Gomes is the author of more than 60 original articles published in international peer reviewed journals, with an h-index of 21 (Source: Scopus, 9/2025). Additionally, she had published 2 book chapters, 3 conference proceeding communications, 20 oral communications and more than 40 poster communications. Her vast experience has been recognized by journals editors as being part of Journal scientific Committee, through the solicitation for manuscript
    peer-review. Ana Gomes is actively involved in teaching and supervision, having co-supervised PhD and postdoctoral researchers, as well as supervised graduate and master’s students in Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, and Dental Medicine. She has also served on academic juries and lectures in Microbiology, Proteomics, Biomolecular Laboratories, and Pharmacology.

    In 2021, Ana Gomes assumed the role of Auxiliary Researcher at CIIS-UCP, in SalivaTec, where she was involved in projects focused on oral microbiome characterization and identifying salivary biomarkers for diagnosing and monitoring oral and systemic diseases, such as periodontitis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. More recently, she is coordinator of CatolicaBiobank (Viseu centre), a support structure at CIIS-UCP that aids the medical community and collaborators in implementing clinical trials and establishing translational and clinical research projects. 

    Currently, in addition to coordinating CatolicaBiobank (Viseu centre) and remaining deeply engaged in SalivaTec research, Ana Gomes serves as an Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, where she is responsible for the courses in Biomolecular Laboratories and Biomedical Materials.
