Biography

Senior researcher at CBQF from Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Invited Assistant Professor at the same institution. Leader of the Fermentation solution research group which focuses on white biotechnology fermentation processes and on the development on finding attractive solutions for their by-products and disruptive applications for the produced biomolecules. Applied research and market driven innovative solutions for cosmetic and skin care, pharmaceutical, food and animal feed and materials applications with strong engagement of companies at an early phase of product development. Activities are settled in a profound link and interaction with European and International industries. Invited Visiting Researcher at Industry Department, University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Chemical Engineering School, Vigo University (Ourense, Spain). She received awards for participation in the seminar Probiotics, Prebiotics, and the Host Microbiome: The Science of Translation Survey, 12th June, in New York Academy of Sciences, fellow of ISAPP (International Scientific Association for Probiotic and Prebiotics), during her PhD an award by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon, Portugal) for participation in congress 27th IDF World Dairy Congress (Shanghai, China) in 2005, and a monetary award for participation in the training course of “Functional Foods” awarded by ABS – Post-Graduation School (Helsinki, Finland). Member of the Scientific Council (ESB, UCP) and Internal Engagement Task Force and internal coordination of the Microbiome and Clinical studies platforms. Since 2018, European Projects Expert Evaluator of Innovation Fund Denmark (IFD), INNOWWIDE, H2020 EC, Eureka Eurostars, EitFood and EitHealth, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions and member of the European Science Foundation. Member of the management team and scientific coordination of the Creation of a centre of excellence in Portugal HUB, focused on the areas of Biotechnology and Circular Economy, adding bioengineering, microbiology, and bioanalytical skills and development of new molecules of high commercial interest, for food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic industries. Principal investigator and member of more than 20 scientific projects. Until now supervised several 7 PhD and master students. More than 90 indexed manuscripts with a h-index of 32 (October 2023), 65 posters and abstracts in national and international conferences, 23 invited oral communications and 7 patents (2 provisional). Research expertise in compounds chemical and bioactivities characterization and development of new and innovative ingredients for applications in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and materials industries. In the microbiome field, 5 project grants based on the development of nanoparticles loaded with polyphenols for gut health (Nanodairy), another on the development of hand sanitizers microbiome friendly (HandCare), one with Portuguese National Cancer Institute (IPO) for the development of formulations for skin, oral and gut microbiome of breast cancer patients which have been subject to radiotherapy (Radiobiome) and finally another in the development of products based on thermal spring waters for menopause woman skin microbiome modulation. Research interest in in vitro models’ development for biological phenomena simulation and microbiome modulation, for compounds and formulations testing, and recently understanding of aging mechanisms.
