Biography

Ana S. Oliveira holds a degree in Biochemistry from Faculty of Sciences and Technology - University of Coimbra, a masters degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Faculty of Pharmacy - University of Porto, and a PhD in Biotechnology, with a specialization in Environmental Science and Engineering from Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Escola Superior de Biotecnologia. Currently, she is a researcher on the wastewater treatment field using the aerobic granular sludge and micro algae-bacterial granular sludge technology. Particular research interests include the application of the aerobic granular sludge technology for bioremediation processes, characterization and valorization of extracellular polymeric substances, the functional dynamics of microbial communities within granules upon stress situations exposure, and microalgae granular biomass for the treatment of wastewater. She has several papers in peer reviewed international scientific journals and communications in scientific international and national conferences. She is actively involved in ongoing projects being team member of national and international projects, all devoted to the treatment and valorisation of wastewater industrial streams, and her work led to 2 provisional applications for international patents. She has been involved in the supervision of a student (MSc degree), focusing on the use of microalgae for the treatment of food industry wastewater streams. Ana S. Oliveira has also been dedicated to teaching practical classes at undergraduate and post-graduate levels (currently teaches 3 units at UCP: Bioreactor Technology, Fermentation and Enzymology, and Sustainability and Environmental Biotechnology) and she has been involved in the dissemination of science activities to the wider public.
