Biography
Ana S. S. Sousa holds a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences - University of Porto and a master's degree in Applied Microbiology from Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Escola Superior de Biotecnologia. Currently, she is a researcher in the soil bioremediation field at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, being part of the Environment and Resources group. Her work is focused on the phytoremediation of metal-contaminated areas, especially in industrial and deactivated mining areas. Under this context, Ana has applied different strategies including the inoculation of beneficial soil microorganisms (microbial inoculants), soil amendments, and cropping patterns. Ana is involved in several ongoing projects, being a research fellow in an international project entitled Phy2SUDOE (SOE4/P5/E1021) that aims to apply innovative phyto-management strategies in contaminated areas of the SUDOE space. She is an active member in student mentoring, counting on laboratory tutoring and guiding of nine students so far. She has presented her work at several national and international conferences. She has been also dedicated to science dissemination activities, through the development and promotion of many experimental activities for high school students, all of them focused on student's sensibilization for environmental issues.
