Biography

Born in 1953, in Santa Maria da Feira. Ordained a priest in the diocese of Porto in 1977, he obtained his doctorate at the Pontificia Università Gregoriana in 1986. He was Professor at the Faculty of Theology of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (1987-2010) and Vice-Rector of the same University (2000-2004). He was President of the Centro de Estudos de História Religiosa (1992-2001) and directed the work Dicionário e História religiosa de Portugal, in 7 volumes. He was curator of several religious art exhibitions. Member of the Academia Portuguesa de História since 1998, he was auxiliary bishop of Lisbon (2005-2011) and Delegate of the Pontifical Council for Culture (2011-2022). He is a member of the Pontifical Commissione di Archeologia sacra (2016-) and Delegate of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences (03-12-2022-).

He has more than a hundred scientific works, published in books and magazines.
