Carolina Barata holds a degree in Conservation and Restoration, a post-graduation in Art Expertise, a MSc in Applied Chemistry and a PhD in Applied Geosciences. She started her professional activity as a Conservator in 1996, having joined several working teams in the field of Easel Painting, Wooden Sculpture, Gilded Woodcarving and Photography Conservation. She has been a lecturer in the field of Conservation at the School of Arts of the Portuguese Catholic University (EA/UCP), in Oporto, between 2005 and 2018. She has coordinated the Master's Degree in Conservation and Restoration from 2016 to 2018, having joined the Scientific Board of the School of Arts during that same period. She is a member of the Research Center for Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR), at EA/UCP, and of the Research Center of Geobiosciences, Geotechnologies and Geoengineering (GeoBioTec) of the University of Aveiro. Carolina Barata is a resercher on Art Materials and Conservation and still supervises several Msc and PhD dissertations in the field of Conservation. She is the principal investigator of the research project ARCAdia, on the reliquary sanctuary of the Madre de Deus Convent, today the National Tile Museum, in Lisbon. Currently, Carolina Barata is a senior official at the Division of Museums of the Municipality of Oporto where she develops research studies on painting collections, in addition to her functions as a conservator and professional trainer at the same institution.
