Biography

Catarina Miranda holds a bachelor's degree in Applied Biology from the University of Minho - School of Sciences, Braga (2016). In November 2018, she completed her master's degree in Molecular Genetics at the same university. During her master's thesis, Catarina was involved in the European project VOLATILE (H2020-NMBP-BIO-2016) developed at Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA). Her research focused on the potential of hundreds of yeasts to accumulate intracellular lipids, employing innovative and efficient methodologies for measurement. The participation in this project resulted in two scientific articles, one of which is Catarina's first author. In January 2019, Catarina worked as a Grant holder at Universidade Católica Portuguesa Faculty of Biotechnology, being her research work integrated into the AQUAVAL project (WaterJPI/0003/2016). Currently, Catarina is a PhD student in Biotechnology at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, with her work centered on the exploration of the Aerobic granular sludge technology under stress scenarios common in the wastewater treatment near coastal regions. She aims to investigate the capacity of AGS technology to handle daily seawater oscillation and the presence of contaminants of emerging concern (i.e., pharmaceuticals) in wastewater. She also intends to explore how these stress scenarios impact the AGS nutrient removal processes and microbial community composition. Until now, the outputs of her PhD work resulted in five scientific posters and two oral communications at national conferences. In 2023, Catarina was involved as a member of the 3BOOST proof of concept grant (POCI-01-0246-FEDER-181302). Within the scope of the project, she had the opportunity to exploit the potential of using a waste-derived material to adsorb two persistent pharmaceuticals in distinct saline wastewaters. The work developed in 3BOOST resulted in one scientific article submission. In the meantime, Catarina also collaborates in several scientific dissemination activities related to the wastewater treatment topic.
