Biography

Catarina Miranda is an environmental biotechnologist, with a PhD in Biotechnology - specialization in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Faculty of Biotechnology), an MSc in Molecular Genetics, and a BSc in Applied Biology from the University of Minho (School of Sciences). Her research interests revolve around wastewater treatment, aerobic granular sludge (AGS), the fate of contaminants of emerging concern in wastewater-based matrices, salinity-driven microbial dynamics, and waste valorization for environmental applications. She has contributed as a researcher to European R&D projects, among which are AQUAVAL (WaterJPI/0003/2016) and VOLATILE (H2020-NMBP-BIO-2016), both related to the field of environmental biotechnology. Catarina has authored six peer-reviewed papers, published in prestigious international journals (Q1), in which her research work has covered biological wastewater treatment technologies (AGS), microbiome profiling, environmental remediation, and waste valorization. She has continuously contributed to the dissemination of her research outputs through multiple scientific communications, including oral presentations, flash talks, and over twenty posters presented at national and international conferences. Her scientific expertise spans advanced analytical chemistry techniques, such as HPLC, LC-MS/MS-Q-TOF, SPE; microbiology and molecular biology; bioinformatic tools for next-generation sequencing (Illumina) data analysis; operation of bioreactors; water/wastewater and microbiological characterization; analyses of plant-soil systems. She keeps herself proactive in science outreach and technical training initiatives by contributing to fostering environmental awareness among middle- and high-school students, and the wider public.
