Clara Caldeira

Phd student of Culture Studies at Universidade Católica Portuguesa/ The Lisbon Consortium. My thesis "Photography of the Portuguese Colonial War: visual memories" reflects on the relationship between memory and photography, namely, private photos the soldiers who fought in the Portuguese Colonial War, articulating it and comparing it with the photojournalistic representation of that period (1961-1974). This project intends to investigate how vernacular photography, produced in the private sphere, not conditioned to military or political purposes, constitutes a rhetoric that complements, clashes or reinforces that of the images published in the press, subject to censorship in a dictatorial regime.
