Biography

Daniela Magalhães is fellow researcher at ESB-UCP, Escola Superior de Biotecnologia da Universidade Católica since 2020. Her research interest is related to Agrarian Sciences with emphasis on Food Science. Her academic education includes BSc in Biotechnology (2016) and an MSc in Food Safety (2019) with an ERASMUS + internship at the Laboratoire d'Étude des Résidus et Contaminants dans les Aliments (LABERCA) in Nantes, France. Her scientific career started as a research fellow in MobFood project at Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina (CBQF), with the main purpose of responding to the challenges of the agri-food market. Currently, she works as a fellow researcher in a European project Medismart: Mediterranean Citrus: innovative soft processing solutions for S.M.A.R.T (Sustainable, Mediterranean, Agronomically evolved, nutRitionally enriched, Traditional) products at CBQF, intending to develop new functional ingredients through the valorization of citrus by-products. The projects participation allowed her to acquire and improve scientific and practical skills related with microbiology analysis, chemical and nutritional characterization of food matrixes and by-products (eg. UHPLC-ToF-MS, LC-HRMS, HPLC and GC-MS), bioactivity analyses of bioactive molecules, such as antioxidant activity (ABTS, DPPH and ORAC assays) and antimicrobial activity. Daniela Magalhães also contributed to the development of new functional fractions recovered from by-products, while challenging the important topics of food waste and circular economy. In the past years, she authored 2 publications in international journals, 9 conference posters, which 3 posters related to the valorization of lemon by-products. Daniela Magalhães also improve her communication skills with the organization of 1 international event/meeting with the participation of Medismart partners.
