Biography
I was born in Santa Maria da Feira, in 1958. I graduated in Medicine, in the University of Coimbra, in 1982. I attended three years of Philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) in Braga, from 1984 until 1987. I joined the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley (California, USA) in 1988. I got two degrees there: the Master of Divinity after three years and the Licentiate in Sacred Theology after two years more. The latter ended with a thesis in Pastoral Theology with the title “Self-knowledge and Christian Discernment”. I joined the “Centre Sèvres” (Jesuit Faculties of Paris - France) in 1998 for the Doctorate in Fundamental Theology. I defended a thesis with the title “The decision of faith in the culture of the individual choices. A theological reflection in the light of Karl Rahner’s anthropology”.
In 2003, I started teaching in the Faculty of Theology of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in Lisbon. I teach regularly Fundamental Theology and Spiritual Theology. I teach thematic seminars too. Some are in the scope of the Master’s degree: Christian faith and the assertion of the individual; Person and mystery: thinking with Karl Rahner; The individual believer and the ecclesial community: thinking with Karl Rahner. Other seminars are in the scope of the doctoral studies: Interpreting the “signs of the times” according to Vatican II; New configurations of Christian faith; ‘Sensus fidei fidelium’: an intervening function in the regulation of Christian faith; Christian faith in the public space; Theology in the face of popular religion: an appeal to discernment.
I was part of the editorial board of “Brotéria - Christianity and Culture” from 2003 to 2015. I was also part of the editorial board of “Didaskalia” from 2004 to 2013. I represent the Faculty of Theology at the general library of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, since 2009. I coordinated the preparation of the Faculty of Theology in 2015/2016 for the Institutional Evaluation in Higher Education. I am a member of the Direction of the Faculty of Theology since may 2018, with the following duties: Institutional Evaluation and System of Quality; Non-degree training.
