Biography

Edgar Freitas Gomes da Silva (Funchal, Madeira, 1962) got his PhD degree in History with a specialization in Contemporary History from the Faculty of Theology of Catholic University of Portugal (2023) in the PIUDHIST - Inter-University Doctoral Programme in History (Change and Continuity in a Global Word), a partnership between five Portuguese higher education institutes: Instituto de Ciências Sociais and Faculdade de Letras (both from Universidade de Lisboa), Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Universidade de Évora.

He was a doctoral fellow of the FCT - Science and Technology Foundation (2019-2023) with the Thesis on the social catholicism and political commitment in Portugal (1965-1976) entitled “'Vendaval de Utopias'. Do catolicismo social ao compromisso político em Portugal (1965-1976). Os católicos da Revolução e o PCP”.

He got his Masters Degree in Theology by Faculty of Theology of Catholic University of Portugal (1985), where he also concluded his Degree in History of Religions (2019).

He was a fellow of the Instituto Camões, I.P. (2023-2024) in Rome (Italy) to research the archives of Pope Pius XII and post-World War II in connection with the history of Portugal.

Integrated researcher at the Centre of Religious History Studies (Centro de Estudos de História Religiosa) - Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP-CEHR) and coordinator of the Project “25 April: sojourns, ruptures and recompositions” (25 de Abril: permanências, ruturas e recomposições).

Main areas of interest: Contemporary History; Social Catholicism; Pluralism and Political commitment; Decolonization and democratization.
