Biography

Francisco Torres is Invited Associate Professor at the Faculty of Human Sciences (FCH) of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP). He is currently teaching ‘European Integration’ at FCH and ‘The Political Economy European Integration’ at Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics. Previously, he taught at the Dept of Economics, FCH/UCP, the National Institute for Public Administration (Programme Chair) and the U. Aveiro (Visiting Associate Professor) and was Executive and Deputy Director of the European Studies Centre/Institute of UCP, where he also coordinated the Master’s Program and the Centre/Institute’s Research. His broader area of research and teaching is European Political Economy. He has been European Political Economy Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science (5 academic years, 2014-19) and a PEFM Associate at St Antony’s College, Oxford University (2012-20). He holds a Ph.D. in European Political Economy – European Studies-Economics (Católica, Lisbon), an MRes (Mestrado) in Economics (Nova, Lisbon) and a 5-year degree also in Economics (Católica, Lisbon). Furthermore, he was a Researcher of Economics at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence (PhD programme, 1986-89), having become the 1st Robert Schuman Fellow of the European Commission at CEPS in Brussels thereafter, returning later on to the EUI as a Visiting Fellow at the Robert Schuman Center for Advanced Studies. He also holds an MA in International Affairs from the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and has held a 1-year post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Oxford.

My broader area of research and teaching is European (and International) Political Economy. My research interests are European integration, institutional change, economic reform in EMU (notably, the role of the ECB and the EP, and national reforms) and EU sustainability and global governance. I have often taken an interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary approach, notably to the analysis of the various crises (global financial, sovereign debt, pandemic, security and energy) and the (sustainability of the) processes of European integration and globalization.
