Hélio Nuno Soares is currently working towards a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Salamanca. The topic of his dissertation is “The Cult and Devotion to Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres (1700-1965)”. He studied Philosophy and Theology at the Episcopal Seminary of Angra and; he has a degree in History and a master in Heritage and Museology from the University of the Azores. Hélio Soares teaches History and Heritage as an assistant guest professor at the Social and Human Sciences Faculty of the University of the Azores. He is a collaborative researcher at several institutions, including the Center for Studies of Religious History of the Portuguese Catholic University; the Humanities Center of the University of the Azores; and the Nova University (Lisbon). He is a member of the Diocesan Service for Cultural Assets of the Church (Angra Diocese) and the Coordinating Committee for the project Dio 500: Religious History of the Azores (1427 – 2016). Hélio Soares took part in the Thesaurus Project, initiated by the National Secretariat for the Church Cultural Assets to inventory the Catholic Church Heritage in the Azores. He participated in the Index PRIMA, which compiled a record of the religious and archival heritage of some parishes in São Miguel. Regarding the DIO 500 project, he promotes and organizes academic and dissemination initiatives in order to foster discussion and investigation about those topics. Hélio Soares has published work on religious history, religious heritage, and the social and anthropological history of the Azores.
