Born in Monção, 1964. He holds a doctorate in Fundamental Theology (Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Sankt Georgen, Frankfurt, Germany), with a thesis on the theological reception of Gadamer's philosophy of art. He is Full Professor at the Faculty of Theology (Braga, Porto and Lisbon), and guest lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, at the Faculdade Jesuíta de Filosofia e Teologia, Belo Horizonte, and at Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais. Member of the Scientific Councils of Teologia (Milan), Salmanticensis (Salamanca), Revista Teología (Buenos Aires), Perspetiva Teológica (Belo Horizonte), Limina (Graz), Kairós (Fortaleza). He is the director of Ephata journal, Revista Portuguesa de Teologia, Faculty of Theology at UCP, and Director of the Research Center for Theology and Religious Studies of UCP.

From 2007 to 2018, he was Director of the Braga Centre of the Faculty of Theology. From 2011 to 2020, he was President of the Braga Regional Centre of the Portuguese Catholic University. From 2020 to 2024, he was Pro-Rector of the UCP.
