Dr. Joana F. Fangueiro earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a specialization in Pharmaceutical Technology from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2016. Her academic expertise was recognized early on when she was granted with the title of "Best Student of the Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences" in 2010 at UFP, Porto, Portugal. Notably, her academic pursuits were supported by an individual fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Throughout her career, Dr. Fangueiro has been actively engaged in cutting-edge research endeavors. She served as a research member at CITAB, University of Tras-os-Montes e Alto-Douro (2014 to 2017), and CNC.IBILI, University of Coimbra (2015 to 2017), demonstrating her commitment to advancing in the field of nanomedicine. Her expertise extends to animal experimentation, holding a FELASA category B certification. Dr. Fangueiro's primary research focuses on the design, development, and targeted delivery of nanotechnology-based systems for ocular, oral, and transdermal drug delivery. Noteworthy contributions include innovative strategies for managing diabetes and its ocular complications, particularly in developing alternatives to insulin administration and novel therapies for diabetic retinopathy. Collaborating with international professionals, such as Prof. Maria Garcia (University of Barcelona and Institut de Nanociencia i Nanotecnologia ICN2), Dr. Fangueiro broadened her research horizons during her doctoral studies. As a post-doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (FCUP), she dived into encapsulating bioantioxidants and conducting pharmacokinetic studies. During 2016 until 2020, Dr. Fangueiro has been a researcher at the 3B´s Research Group at the University of Minho, focusing on innovative platforms utilizing natural biomaterials for tissue regeneration. Additionally, she has contributed to supervising and mentoring students in their doctoral thesis. Transitioning to the industry, Dr. Fangueiro served as the Head of the Research and Innovation Department Manager at Nortempresa, concentrating on sustainable and innovative technologies in cosmetics, utilizing agricultural and food waste residues. In 2022, Dr. Fangueiro moved to Alchemy project, which is a partnership between Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Centro Regional do Porto and Amyris Inc., working in the field of valorization of subproducts for cosmetics and nutraceutical industry. Dr. Fangueiro's scholarly impact is evident through her extensive publication record, comprising book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, and opinion pieces. She maintains an active role in academia as a supervisor of junior researchers and reviewer for several international scientific journals in the fields of nanomedicine and biomaterials. In summary, Dr. Joana F. Fangueiro's multifaceted contributions to pharmaceutical sciences, nanomedicine and biomaterial encompass groundbreaking research, industry innovation, and academic leadership.
