Biography

Joana Inês Bastos Barbosa. PhD degree in Biotechnology-Microbiology (2015), Master's degree in Food Science and Technology (2008) and a degree in Microbiology (2004), all by Escola Superior de Biotecnologia of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (ESB-UCP). She had 3 research grants, two of them working with the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes (2004 to 2010), a PhD grant working on the development of a functional orange juice powder by spray drying (2010-2015) and a postdoctoral grant working with the pathogen Clostridioides difficile and bioactive substances (2015-2022). On 1st July 2022, she held a non-fixed term employment contract (UCP) to perform research, development and knowledge transfer activities under the scope of the 3Boost project and, on 1st April 2023, she was hired (UCP) as a Junior Researcher(VIIAFOOD_02/C05-i01/2022 through Recovery and Resiliency Program) allowing her to increase contact network and continue research on biocontrol area. Joana participated in 18 projects (13 industry-related). Of these projects, she considered that a reference must be made to Portugal2020(PDR2020-1.0.1 FEADER031359) project on the exploitation of natural ingredients in dry-cured meat; FEDER(POCI-01-0247-FEDER-046080) project on innovative natural, nutritious and consumer-oriented clean label food and, recently, a PRR(VIIAFOOD_02/C05-i01/2022) project on sustainable & clean-label cured and cooked meat products. She published 43 scientific papers indexed to Scopus (H-Index 21; 1227 citations), 1 editorial, 1 encyclopedia entry, 6 reviews (2 as 1st author, 1 as the corresponding author and 3 collaborations), 8 chapters in books (3 as 1st author, 3 as 2nd author, 2 as the corresponding author), 3 proceedings in meetings, and more than 70 poster communications in scientific symposiums. Joana Barbosa supervised 7 MSc theses, co-supervised 3 MSc theses, 1 final work of post-graduation, 8 international and 14 national projects for bachelor's degrees and 8 projects of technological courses. She was also the daily supervisor of 2 international PhD students and 1 Postdoc. Currently, she is the principal supervisor of 4 MSc, co-supervisor of 5 PhD theses and supervisor of 1 PhD thesis. Joana Barbosa was invited to join the editorial board of the peer-reviewed journals BioMed Research International and Foods and has been the guest editor of seven special issues (Foods, Biology, Microorganisms and Frontiers in Microbiology). Very recently, she contributed as Juri of an academic degree (1 PhD, 13 MSc) and collaborated as a Jury of 8 candidature assessments. Joana has also been dedicated to the dissemination of science in the younger community. She is the leader of the CBQF Task Force called "Society Engagement", whose main goal is to communicate science to the community through the promotion of dissemination campaigns with schools and the organization of activities to captivate new students at different graduation levels, including young researchers.
