Biography
nstrumental Analytical Chemistry is the epicentre of Jorge Barbosa professional life experience. Doping control, forensic toxicology, and food safety the main areas of research.
Jorge has completed his Ph.D. on Bromatology and Hydrology at Pharmacy Faculty of Coimbra University and his undergraduate studies at Pharmacy Faculty of Lisbon University.
In 1982 he was involved in Doping Control at the Accredited Olympic Committee Laboratory of Lisbon. Five years later he accepted the position of Technical Director of the Laboratory. In 1993 Jorge moves to National Institute of Legal Medicine after accepted the position of Head of the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory. In 2000 he runs for a position of Invited Researcher and Team Leader of the Research Unit for Food Safety and Technology at the Portuguese Public Laboratory devoted to Agrarian and Veterinary Research (INIAV) where his main focus was the development of sophisticated and robust analytical methods for a wide variety of organic micro-contaminants in food products of animal origin to assure a hight level of consumers protection. He leaves INIAV beginning 2020.
Jorge is now a researcher on Food Quality and Technology research group of the Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAVQ) part of the Network of Chemistry and Technology (REQUIMTE).
In Food Safety area, he was team member on a dozen of research projects supported by FCT’s national funds and published more than 50 papers in indexed JRC journals. Jorge is acting as external expert for ESFA, is a member of the Veterinary Medicines Evaluation Group (GAMV) aof the Veterinary Portuguese National authority (DGAV), technical auditor for Portuguese Institute of accreditation (IPAC) and Invited Professor at Pharmacy Faculty of Coimbra University.
