Biography

Jorge Vaz de Carvalho has a bachelor of arts in Modern Literatures from the Universidade de Lisboa, a masters in Comparative Literature from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a PhD in Cultural Studies from the Faculdade de Ciências Humanas of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. His literary works include poetry (A Lenta Rendição da Luz, 1992; Todos os Caminhos, 2023) short stories, essays (among others, Jorge de Sena, Sinais de Fogo como romance de formação, Jorge de Sena prize 2010 and PEN Clube de Ensaio prize 2011; Ensaios de Sena, 2023) and translation (including ALIGHIERI, Dante, Divina Comédia, Vida Nova and Convívio); CASTIGLIONE, Baldassarre, O Livro do Cortesão; BRUNO GIORDANO, Sobre o infinito, o Universo e os mundos; BLAKE, William, Canções de Inocência  e de Experiência; VICO Giambattista, Ciência Nova, prize of scientific and technical translation of the União Latina/FCT 2006; AUSTEN, Jane, Emma; WOOLF, Virginia, Diários e Viagens; JOYCE, James. Ulisses, prize of Literary translation of hte Associação Portuguesa de Tradutores e da Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores; ECO, Umberto, O Nome da Rosa, O cemitério de Praga, Construir o inimigo e outros escritos ocasionais e Número Zero; STEINER, George Tolstoy ou Dostoievsky). He frequently writes for cultural journals and magazines and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences on literary, musical and cultural topics. He also a musician. He was Musical Director of the Orquestra Nacional do Porto (1999-2006). He was Director of the Portuguese Instituto das Arts (2005-2007). He is currently a professor at Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisbon.
