Within an ever changing global scenario, pathogens and their associated diseases are emerging as major challenges for sustainability, social development, the economy and human health. Understanding the conditions and drivers for pathogen emergence, persistence, spread and control remains a cornerstone of contemporary epidemiology, to which we dedicate our time and research expertise.
We are interested in applying computational approaches to biological data related to pathogens, their associated diseases, hosts and environments. We aim to better understand the evolution, ecology and epidemiology of pathogens under an holistic perspective that includes all biological levels, from genetics to the environment. While we remain generalists regarding research experience and output, that spans a wide range of human and non-human pathogens, our main interests remain focused on antigenically variable viral and bacterial pathogens, and those that are mosquito-borne.
Two ongoing and main paths of research are the development of computational approaches to explore big genetic data towards the discovery and development of vaccines agains multi-strain pathogens, and the development of computational approaches informed by climate data to explore the transmission and reproduction potential of mosquito-borne viruses.
