Biography

Karen Cristine Barbosa concluded her PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Heritage at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Porto in 2023. Her area of research was on indoor air quality in museums, archives and libraries. She had a Postgraduate Certificate with Specialization in Conservação e Restauração de Bens Culturais Móveis - Conservation in Mobile Cultural Heritage (specialist) in 1998 from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (CECOR-UFMG), and also had a post-graduate degree in Heritage Conservation from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She holds a degree in Engraving in 1990 from Fine Arts School at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Dra. Karen worked as a head conservator for 19 years at Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, MASP, São Paulo, where she gained extensive experience in loans, conservation in temporary exhibition, traveling with art work (courier), developing special solutions for art traveling, paintings conservation, preparing microclimate vitrines for special objects, elaborating nacional and international conservation projects (ex. Louvre with Poussin, Modigliani, Manet and Cranach; Van Gogh Museum with Van Gogh; Palazzo Barberini in Rome with Piero di Cosimo, Soprintendenza di Perugia with Maiolicas collection, et al.). She also worked as a fellow at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, LACMA, during 10 months where she had experience with conservation of Americans and British paintings and at KIK-IRPA in Brussels where she received a postgraduate internship grant to work for 8 months at the paintings conservation lab. Her interested and specialization area is in heritage conservation with focus in museums, preventive conservation, paintings conservation, indoor air quality and microclimate frames.
