Biography

Maria Bartolomeu completed her PhD in 2022, and her MSc degree in 2015 in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Aveiro (UA) after completing her bachelor's degree in biology at the same University. During that period, she had the opportunity to initiate and develop some research work in the Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) field, for pathogenic microbial inactivation and search for aPDT effects on the microorganism's genetic material and virulence factors. In 2017 she was awarded a PhD fellowship by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) to work in the Applied Microbiology group [Biology Department, UA & Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM), UA] in the field of water and wastewater disinfection and decontamination, based on the usage of photodynamic approach for both microbial inactivation (aPDT) and chemical pollutants degradation (advanced oxidation processes, AOP). During the academic year 2017/2018, she was an assistant in Environmental Microbiology laboratory classes and was part of the organizing committee of the Advanced Course: New methods for the inactivation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. During the last few years, she has also been part of the mentoring team at Summer Academy (an annual event promoted by UA). And, she has also been mentoring several bachelor, master, and PhD students in the Laboratory for Applied Microbiology (LMA) research group, and more recently, she is the co-supervisor of master students. In 2021-2022, she was a research fellow at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM, UA). Since 2022, she has been a Junior Researcher at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS), at Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), in the scope of a project focused on Digital Technologies and Pedagogical Innovation in Higher Education, where she is an Invited Assistant at the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FMD-UCP). Since Nov/2023, Maria Bartolomeu has been an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Dental Medicine (UCP), and an Integrated Researcher of CIIS. To date, Maria Bartolomeu is the author/co-author of 15 original research articles published in international peer-reviewed journals (h-index 7) being cited 292 times, one patent, conference posters in international conferences), and oral communications including in international conferences. Her value as a researcher has been recognized by her peers, being invited to review scientific articles in indexed journals.
