Biography

Maria Isabel Santos (Câmara de Lobos, 1982) is a fellow researcher at the Integral Human Development Postdoctoral Program from Católica Doctoral School (CADOS). She got her PhD Degree in Social Work (2022) from the Faculty of Human Sciences – Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP-FCH), with a thesis on "Marie-Thérèse Cécile Lévêque and the Social Work Institute (1935-1946): History and Memory". She also obtained her Master's degree (2009) and degree (2005) in Social Work from that same Faculty. Researcher at the Centre of Religious History Studies (Centro de Estudos de História Religiosa) – Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP-CEHR) since 2008, where she's currently responsible for organising and describing M.ª Leonor Corrêa Botelho´s (1915-96) documentary collection, and well as a member of the “Encyclopedia of Religious History in Portugal – online" editorial team. She was part of the research team for the project "Catholic Organisations and Press in Twentieth Century Portuguese Society" (2011-2014), supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). She also joined the Centre for Social Work and Sociology Studies – Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP-CESSS) (2006-2016), sharing assistant coordinator duties with research, namely studies on homeless immigrants in Portugal and on the elderly population's support needs in Lisbon. Author of the book "O Discurso Histórico sobre o Serviço Social em Portugal" (2009), and co-author of "Imigrantes Sem-Abrigo em Portugal" (2013). She has taken part in organising events at both research Centres, including the 6th European Conference for Social Work Research, on the theme "Reflective Social Work Practices in Contemporary Societies: Dialogues and New Pathways between Praxis and Research" (UCP-CESSS, 2016), and the Social and Religious History Studies Seminar (UCP-CEHR, 2009-2011). Adjunct coordinator and lecturer on the Postgraduate Programme "Current Perspectives, Accompaniment and Inclusion in Social Work" (2023/24), being held at the University of Madeira (UMa), in partnership with UCP. She was a teacher on the Social Work degree programme at UCP, Lisbon (2006-2016), and at the University of Madeira during the 2007/08 academic year. She was also part of the "Anuário do Centro de Estudos de História do Atlântico" Advisory Board (2009-2015), and worked as a social worker / sustainability and social responsibility director at Grupo Sousa (Funchal, 2016-2019). Member of the Groupe de Recherche sur l'Histoire du Service Social (GREHSS), based in Paris, as also of the European Social Work Research Association (ESWRA), in which she integrates the "Social Work, History and Research" group. Member of the Associação dos Profissionais de Serviço Social (APSS). Main interest areas: social and religious history; history of poverty and assistance; social work identity and professional field development.
