Biography

Mariana G. Bexiga is an experienced Project Manager and Researcher in the field of Life and Health Sciences, with experience in molecular cardiology, membrane trafficking, and nanotoxicoloty. Mariana graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2005. She obtained her PhD in Biochemistry, speciality of Molecular Biology, in 2012 from the same University. Her PhD project was developed in University College Dublin, Ireland, and focussed on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of toxicity induced by positively-charged nanoparticles. Mariana has extensive experience in Genome-wide (GW) RNAi screening applied to different fields, in particular membrane trafficking, nanoparticle uptake and toxicity and molecular cardiology. She was the Science Manager for the MIRACLE project, a EU-funded project in the area of photonics and supported management for the RESTORE project. Her roles included managing the communication within and outside of the consortium and managing the exploitation of the products that will arise from the project. Additionally, she supported grant writing for several H2020 calls, with her work contributing to raising close to 9M euro. Mariana has been very successful in procuring individual fellowships. She has also received a PhD fellowship from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) and an exchange grant from the European Science Foundation (ESF). Over the years she has also received several awards recognising both her scientific merit as well as her communication skills, of note is the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting Fellow award by the Irish Research Council (IRC), which allowed her to represent Ireland in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. Alongside her research activities, Mariana has extensive experience teaching both at undergraduate and MSc/PhD level. Throughout the years she has also supervised six undergraduate student research projects, one master student project and mentored three PhD students. Mariana also actively participates in Science Communication and Outreach. Mariana has published her work in 12 international peer-reviewed articles and has presented her work in national and international meetings, including 7 oral communications. Over the years, Mariana has been integrated in the team of several research projects funded by European Commission, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and FCT.
