Biography

Marlene Barros PhD in Biochemistry in the specialty of Enzymology and Protein Chemistry at the University of Coimbra (1995) and held in 2007 the “Agregação” in Biology at the University of Aveiro. Professor at the Portuguese Catholic University since 2001. Director of the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FMD) since 2020 and Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS) since 2015 (rated Very Good by FCT). Deputy Director of the Department of Health Sciences from 2010-2015 and Regional Director of the Institute of Health Sciences in Viseu from 2015 until the creation of the FMD. She coordinated the Master in Molecular Microbiology at the University of Aveiro and the Degree in Biomedical Sciences at Católica. She was responsible for the scientific and pedagogical coordination of the Basic Sciences curricular units of the Dental Medicine course at UCP. She taught at the University of Aveiro (1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles) and at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (2nd cycle). Currently teaches the course units in Cell Biology and Immunobiology. As a researcher established and is the scientific coordinator of SalivaTec, a laboratory dedicated to the development of strategies for the diagnosis of saliva. The current research interest focuses on the integration of information about proteins with the main objective of clarifying molecular mechanisms of diseases and identifying useful biomarkers for diagnosis or as therapeutic targets. She is the author of several publications in the area of Protein Chemistry and Molecular Mechanisms, ranging from laboratory approaches to in silico tools.
