Biography

Professor for German and Culture Studies at Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) in Lisbon, Vice-Rector for Research and Doctoral Education, Director of CADOS, Católica Doctoral School. Since September 2025 he serves as the Chair of the Steering Committee of the Council for Doctoral Education of the European University Association (EUA-CDE). He is currently also member of the board of the Federation of European Catholic Universities (FUCE). At UCP, he coordinates the PhD program on Integral Ecology and the Post-doc program on Integral Human Development. He was guest lecturer at the Universities of Bamberg (Germany), Galway (Ireland) and Minho (Portugal), from 2006 to 2010 President of the Portuguese Association for German Studies, 2007-2013 coordinator of the research group on Translating Europe across the Ages, 2014-2017 coordinator of the research group on Culture, Translation and Cognition and since 2017 coordinator of the research group Cognition and Translatability at the Research Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC) at UCP, and between 2012 and 2020 director of the Center. Between 2016 and 2019 he served as a Vice-dean of the Faculty for Human Sciences at UCP.
His research focuses on the relation between Cognition and Culture and on the literary representation of the Idea of Europe, aiming at a holistic understanding of science and the arts.
