Biography

Rui Pedro Albergaria Pacheco Freire de Almeida completed Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Communication in 2020/01/24 (14/20 average) and a Master’s degree in Translation and Linguistic Consultancy in 2024/07/24 (17/20 average), both by the Faculty of Social and Human Science Faculty of the University of the Azores. During is BA, he started working more seriously as a translator: a decision that would impact both his professional and academic life. After his BA, he worked both as a freelance translator and an in-house translator for the Artes e Letras editor and publisher in Ponta Delgada, Azores. After this endeavour, Rui Pedro Almeida pursued a Master’s degree, wherein in explored translation and epistolography, travel-writing as translation, translation history, and the interlinkage between Azorean culture, history, and imagery, to translation. Moreover, during his MA, Rui Pedro Almeida was invited to teach the A1/A2 Portuguese as a Foreign Language Course (PLE), at the University of the Azores. After the success of his MA dissertation and overall performance, he decided to apply for the interuniversity PhD program in Translation Studies held by the Faculty of Human Sciences at Universidade Católica Portuguesa and NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities at Nova University of Lisbon (NOVA FCSH), where he is currently in his first year. Besides the exploration in the interconnection between the archipelago of the Azores and the objects and problematics of Translation Studies and Translation History, Rui Pedro’s research interests also lay in theoretical explorations in the interdisciplinary radius of translation. In this last avenue, already during his PhD’s curricular year, he presented a well-received paper, entitled “Chess in intersemiotic translation: an exploration on translation units”, in the New Voices in Translation Studies VIII conference, held on the 23rd and 24th of January, 2025.
