Biography

Rui Bordalo graduated in Conservation and Restoration in 2003 and completed a PhD at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London (2011), with a thesis on the consequences of laser cleaning of oil paintings and laser-induced molecular changes in pigments. He taught at Universidade Portucalense (2009-2012) before pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship at the HERCULES Laboratory with an individual project ("19th century artistic materials in Portugal: analytical and statistical characterisation") in 2013-2016 under an FCT grant (BPD/85259). There, he analysed and identified artistic materials using a wide range of analytical techniques (XRF, SEM-EDX, XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, FORS, colorimetry and microscopy), while developing non-destructive in-situ analytical methodologies. In 2016, he joined another project dedicated to knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship in Cultural Heritage. In 2018, he joined Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) where he carried out research on a project centred on the study and conservation of materials from the works of Soares dos Reis. Since then, he developed research and lectured at all levels at UCP. In 2022, Rui started the SCULPTMatters project – Significance and Production Context of Modern Sculpture from the Schools of Fine Arts in Porto (1836-1960): Impact in Changing Societies of a Post-Digital World in the Public Memory (2022.08638.CEECIND). He is currently an integrated member of CITAR. Since 2004, he has been developing a series of interests and skills related to computers, including web development, programming, databases and digital imaging in Cultural Heritage applications. In this area, he has a postgraduate degree in Computer Science Applied to Organisations (specialising in Information Systems Development) from ISCTE. In addition to his teaching experience, he has supervised several MSc dissertations and PhD theses in his areas of specialisation.
