Biography

Sara Magno obtained her Ph.D. in Culture Studies from Universidade Católica Portuguesa in cotutelle with the University of Copenhagen, supported by an FCT international scholarship. Her research focuses on documentary filmmaking within contemporary art, examining the intersections between art and politics, as well as concepts of documentality and paraesthetics in the works of artists such as Salomé Lamas, Jeremy Shaw, and Louis Henderson, alongside Trinh T Minh-ha and Hito Steyerl. She holds a Master's degree in Communication and Art from Nova University of Lisbon, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, where her thesis explored the refigurations of the archive in the films of Harun Farocki, Hito Steyerl, and Filipa César. Sara's academic background also includes studies in Photography and Video Art at Ar.Co, Lisbon, and the Gerrit Rietveld Arts and Design Academy, Amsterdam. She further enriched her education through participation in the Maumaus Independent Study Program directed by Jurgen Bock in Lisbon. Sara has contributed to various arts and culture institutions in Lisbon, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC), Communications Museum, Hangar: Artistic Research Center, and Quadrado Azul Gallery. She served as co-editor at Diffractions, an online peer-reviewed graduate journal focused on culture studies, and regularly contributes to journals and academic publications on contemporary art. Currently, Sara serves as the Outreach Officer for Transform4Europe, an alliance of European universities dedicated to addressing sustainability challenges in the EU, including climate change, inclusivity, and digitalization.
