Biography

Susana Afonso is Senior Lecturer in Portuguese at the University of Exeter, UK. She is currently the co-Director of Global Engagement and the co-Director of the MA in Intercultural Communication which she developed. Her research expertise is in Cognitive (Socio)linguistics and Construction Grammar. She investigates language variation and change from an empirical, usage-based approach. She is particularly interested in the pluricentricity of Portuguese, especially the emergence and development of non-standard varieties of Portuguese. She has conducted research on the constructional innovations in the Portuguese spoken by East Timorese in East Timor and in the diaspora and on the comparison (similarities) between non-standard varieties of Portuguese. She has developed collaborative work on the comparison between non-standard Brazilian and European Portuguese. She has also been engaged in collaborative interdisciplinary work with educators and museum studies researchers on the communication in science museums.
