Biography
Tânia Ganito is Assistant Professor at the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Lisbon. She received her PhD in Culture Studies from the Faculty of Human Sciences, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, with a thesis that explores the interplay between art, silence and memory based on the work of contemporary Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang. She holds an M.A. in Anthropological Sciences (ISCSP-ULisboa), a B.A. in Anthropology (ISCSP-UTL) and a B.A. in Chinese Language (Beijing University of Language and Culture). She has conducted ethnographic research in China and has published on issues related to ethnic minorities, identity, silence, legacies of violence, memory and visuality. Her research has been supported by grants from Oriente Foundation and FCT. She has participated in the research project financed by FCT “Critique of the Singularity: Catastrophic Events and the Rhetoric of Representation” (CECC-UCP, in partnership with the Freie Universität of Berlin and the University of Kyoto) and was co-founder and member of the editorial team of Diffractions – Graduate Journal for the Study of Culture. Tânia is a member of the Research Center for Communication and Culture (FCH-UCP), Collaborating Researcher at Instituto do Oriente (ISCSP-ULisboa), Invited Assistant Professor at FCH-UCP (Master in Asian Studies) and Coordinator of MobCID - Anthropology, Mobility, Citizenship and Development Lab (ISCSP-ULisboa).
