Description
This research project focuses on the study of concepts such as translation, rewriting and transcreation, questioning the role and the significance of translation in the writing of authors who are also translators. The specific study case is that of Ana Hatherly, whose translational work will be divided into interlinguistic translation, intralinguistic translation, intersemiotic translation and free recreations, in order to develop a critical perspective on the translational choices made by the author, depending on the kind of text, the author and the context in which Hatherly’s translations where produced. Ana Hatherly’s work is of particular interest for Translation Studies, given that her original works were also translated into other languages, that she kept a continuous correspondence with her translators, and that her letters can be found in the author’s personal collection in the archives at Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. One of the goals will be to edit these letters and pursue a critical study of the issues discussed by the author and her translators, not only on Hatherly’s work, but also regarding translation and the free recreation of texts.
