Project Details
Description
The Building Up MPAs project is dedicated to the creation and development of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) within Portuguese waters, guiding them from initial concept to the establishment of a comprehensive legal framework and effective practical implementation. By collaborating with civil society, international organisations, and public authorities, the project brings together diverse perspectives to design MPAs that meet ecological, social, and economic objectives.
As a result of this project, two new MPAs have been established in Portuguese maritime areas: the Algarve MPA (Pedra do Valado) in 2023 and the Azores MPA (Blue Azores) in 2024. Additionally, the Selvagens MPA in Madeira, was significantly expanded in 2021.
