Project Details

Description

It corresponds to Telma Ruas' PhD project in PIUDHist - Interuniversity PhD Programme in History: change and continuity in a global world. Supervisor: Sérgio Ribeiro Pinto (UCP-CEHR)

Key findings

Define the meaning of the word’s education and instruction. To analyse the interpretations that the nation's representatives attributed to them in the parliamentary debates, which made it possible to assess the political strategy that determined public education policies during the constitutional monarchy. Reforming the education system and dignifying the work of educational agents were the priorities of the parliamentarians and successive executives, considering the principles of the liberal state: civic participation of citizens and socio-economic promotion of the nation and the inventory of objectives and values conditioned by the state's financial capacity. These were the themes we addressed in this research.
