Key findings

The process that led to the creation of the diocese of Setúbal, from the territory of the Patriarchate of Lisbon, formally began in 1966. Following the Second Vatican Council, Cardinal Cerejeira sought to carry out a pastoral restructuring of the Patriarchate. One of the lines of action chosen was to divide the diocese into pastoral regions, each with an Episcopal Vicar designated for its dynamism. One of these regions covered the Setúbal peninsula. This territory, at the time, was experiencing strong demographic growth, one of its causes being the reinforcement of the industrial fabric of that region as well as the attraction exerted by the capital itself. During the process that led to the constitution of the diocese of Setúbal, the ecclesiastical leaders of Lisbon undertook sociological, demographic and religious studies of the territory in question, seeking to understand the social dynamics in which it was intended to increase the presence of the Catholic Church. The diocese of Setúbal would be canonically erected on July 16, 1975 (along with the diocese of Santarém) after the revolution that occurred in Portugal on April 25, 1974.
