History in the Age of (Dis)Information

Understood as the “daughter of time”, history is a permanent exercise in weaving and reweaving the web of events. Determined by the concerns of the present, historical science is not understood, nor does it want to be understood, as a mere and simple study of the past for the sake of the past, but rather for what that past can and may represent in terms of implications and meanings with a view to a better understanding of the present moment. In a world in constant change and transformation, with multiple facets and perspectives, which some characterise as the era of “post-truth”, in which attempts are made to deny or obliterate the authenticity of information, and also of history, CEPCEP saw the urgency of contributing to the present study, giving priority to approaches that would create and recreate the discursive and narrative thread on topics related to the experience and lived reality of its object of study: Portuguese-speaking peoples and cultures.

In this sense, ‘History in the Age of (Dis)Information’ seeks to bring to light themes and problems from a present past that continue to press upon the contemporary world, in an attempt to give voice to realities, issues, or topics that are little known or even silenced. With the collaboration of renowned experts, it aims to establish a decisive and determining moment of historical and cultural reflection that is always under construction.
